Negril

A town organised around its coast, for a trip where the beach is the point rather than part of it.

Why Negril

Negril is shaped by its coastline rather than by a centre. Seven Mile Beach runs along one side of the town and the West End cliffs sit on the other, and very little in between asks for your attention the way a city does.

That is the appeal and the trade at the same time. The days here are slower because there is less pulling at them, and that slower pace tends to reward a longer stay more than it rewards a few days.

The cost is the drive. Negril is about fifty miles from Sangster International in Montego Bay, a little over an hour on a clear run and longer in traffic. On a longer stay that tradeoff tends to fade quickly. On a long weekend, the transfer takes up a much larger share of the trip.

The other side of town is the West End, where the coast turns to cliffs. Rick's Cafe has been there since 1974, cliff diving happens off the rocks there, and the end of the day is the thing everything else is arranged around.

Getting your bearings

  1. 01

It is a drive from the airport

About fifty miles from Sangster International in Montego Bay. A little over an hour of driving on a clear run, longer in traffic. Worth planning around rather than discovering on arrival.

  2. 02

    Two coasts, one town

Seven Mile Beach on one side, the West End cliffs on the other. They are different evenings, and which one you are near shapes the trip more than where you stay does.

  3. 03

The sunset is the fixed point

On the West End the end of the day is the thing the rest is arranged around. Rick's Cafe has sat on those cliffs since 1974.

  4. 04

How it differs from Montego Bay

Montego Bay has the airport, the city and the shorter transfers. Negril has the beach and the pace. The honest split is length of stay rather than taste.

Our take

Our view: Negril earns a week and punishes a long weekend. If the beach and the end of the day are the reason for the trip, nothing in Montego Bay competes. If you have three nights, the hour each way is a real cost and we would spend it elsewhere.

The other one

Montego Bay A city on the water with the island's main airport in it. It can be a practical base for a first trip, especially when you want beaches, city access and the airport close together.
