Restaurant
Pushcart Jerk Center & Rum Bar
West End Road, Negril, Westmoreland
An open air jerk centre and rum bar on the Negril West End, where the pan rather than the view is what the place is arranged around.
Why go
It is a food stop first. On a coast road where most of the known addresses are organised around the end of the day, this one is organised around the grill.
Chicken, pork and fish come off the jerk pan with the usual fixings, alongside a wider spread of Jamaican cooking that runs to curried goat, oxtail and fried chicken.
The menu borrows from specific places rather than from a general idea of Jamaican food. The peppered shrimp takes after the roadside vending at Middle Quarters in St Elizabeth, and the steamed fish with bammy after Port Royal.
Where it fits
It sits on the West End cliffs, on the same road as everything else on this side of town, within the Rockhouse property. That is useful to know mostly for finding it.
This is the answer to what to eat on the West End rather than what to watch. It works as the dinner either side of an evening you have already planned somewhere else.
Good to know
It is a restaurant, not a viewpoint
Rick's Cafe is a few minutes along the same coast and it is about the cliffs. This is about the food. Going to both in one evening is a normal way to do it.
The cooking happens on the pan
Jerk here is smoked and seasoned over the grill rather than reheated, and the rest of the kitchen runs around that. It is street food cooking given a proper room.
It is open air
Tables sit outside under cover, with music and colour as part of the setting. It is a lively room rather than a quiet one.
It is on the cliffs, not the beach
This is the West End. If you are staying on Seven Mile Beach it is a crossing of town rather than a walk.
Our take
Our view: this is the West End stop to make when the decision in front of you is dinner rather than sunset. The West End has plenty of places to watch the light go; it has fewer where the food is the reason you chose the address.
