Where to stay
Negril or Montego Bay?
They share an airport and almost nothing else. Which one fits depends on how long you are staying.
Jamaica · Updated September 2026
This is the first real decision of a Jamaica trip and it gets made too quickly. Both sit on the same coast, both are reached through the same airport, and they want completely different things from your week.
There is no winner here. There is a length of stay, and the answer follows from it.
How they compare
The same coast, two different trips.
Overall feel
A working city, or a long beach
Montego Bay is a city that happens to have beaches. There is traffic, there are people going to work, and the tourist strip is one part of somewhere larger.
Negril is organised around its coast. The shape of the place follows the beach and then the cliffs, and very little of it asks for your attention in the way a city does.
Beaches
Reachable, or the reason you came
Montego Bay's beaches are close to where you are staying and close to everything else. Doctor's Cave sits on Gloucester Avenue and inside the Montego Bay Marine Park, so the reef is reachable from a beach you can walk to from dinner.
Negril has Seven Mile Beach, and the West End cliffs on the other side of town. If the beach is the point of the trip rather than part of it, this is the side that delivers.
Convenience
Ten minutes, or an hour and a bit
Sangster International is in Montego Bay. The Hip Strip is close enough to walk from the terminal, and on a short trip that saves you a meaningful part of two days.
Negril is about fifty miles from the airport, which is a little over an hour of driving on a clear run and longer in traffic. That is easier to justify on a week than on a long weekend.
Evenings
Walkable, or built around sunset
Montego Bay's evening happens along Gloucester Avenue, where the restaurants and bars are close enough together to decide on foot.
Negril's evening starts with the sun going down over the water. Rick's Cafe has been on the West End cliffs since 1974, there is cliff diving off the rocks there, and the sunset is the thing the day is arranged around.
Excursions
A base, or a destination
Montego Bay sits closer to the rest of the north coast. Falmouth and the Martha Brae are roughly forty minutes east, and more of the coast is reachable as a day out.
From Negril the same trips are longer. Whether that matters depends on whether you came to move around or to stay still.
Deciding
Which one may suit you
Montego Bay may suit you better on a first visit, because everything sits closer together and a plan that goes slightly wrong costs you less of the day.
Negril may suit you better if the beach and the sunset are the whole point of the trip, and you are content for the days to be slow.
Doing both is possible, but only on a stay long enough to absorb the transfer twice.
So which one
Choose Montego Bay if
- You are here for a long weekend and do not want to lose two half days to transfers
- It is your first time in Jamaica
- You want to walk to dinner rather than arrange a drive to it
- You plan to take day trips along the north coast
Choose Negril if
- You have a week, so an hour of driving stops mattering
- The beach is the reason for the trip rather than part of it
- Sunset is the part of the day you actually plan around
- You want the West End cliffs, and are happy for the days to be slow
Our take
Our view, and it is only that: under four nights, stay in Montego Bay, because the transfer costs you too much of a short trip. Longer than four nights and it stops mattering, and the beach starts to. If you genuinely cannot choose, a week is enough to do both and a long weekend is not.
