Natural Site
Mayfield Falls
Pennycooke, Westmoreland
A river in the hills inland from Negril that you walk up rather than look at, through a run of small falls and pools.
Why go
It is a river walk rather than a waterfall viewing. You go up the riverbed through a sequence of small cascades and pools, in the water most of the way.
It is the half day inland that Negril otherwise does not have. Everything else about the town happens on the coast.
Where it fits
The river is in the hills of interior Westmoreland, inland from the coast road east of Negril. It is a half day with the drive rather than a stop.
It suits a trip that has had enough beach, and it suits people who want to be in water that is not the sea.
Good to know
Two operations use the name
Two separate businesses on this river sell access to it, one of them trading as the original. They are different entrances to the same water. Confirm which one a tour is taking you to rather than assuming.
You will be in the river
This is a walk upstream over rock, not a path beside the water. Footwear that can get wet is the difference between enjoying it and enduring it.
The river is the attraction
What you are going to see is the water and the gorge. Everything else at either entrance is arrangement around that.
Our take
Our view: worth the drive if you want a day that is not the beach, and worth going early. It is a river in the hills rather than a spectacle, and the pleasure of it is being in it for an hour rather than photographing it for five minutes.
