Restaurant
Alfred's Ocean Palace
Norman Manley Boulevard, Negril, Westmoreland
A family run seaside restaurant and beach bar on the Seven Mile Beach side of Negril, with the sand still part of the room.
Why go
It is a restaurant on the beach rather than a beach with a restaurant attached. That is a real difference on this side of Negril, where a lot of eating happens wherever you already are.
The kitchen is built around Jamaican country cooking and locally caught seafood, which makes it a decision rather than a default.
Live music has been part of what it is for a long time. By its own account Alfred's has been putting roots, rock and reggae on a stage set on the beach for more than twenty five years.
Where it fits
If you are staying on the beach side of Negril, this fits into an evening there without crossing town. From the West End cliffs it is a separate trip rather than something you fold into the day.
It suits an evening you want to be somewhere specific rather than a meal you fit around the day.
Good to know
It is family owned and run
Alfred's describes itself as a family owned and operated seaside restaurant, beach bar and guesthouse. That is a different kind of business to the resort dining on either side of it.
The restaurant is on the sand
Which is the point of coming, and also the thing to dress for. This is a beach room, not a dining room with a sea view.
Music is part of its identity
What is on in any given week is not something to build a trip around, but the stage on the beach explains the shape of the place and the way an evening runs here.
It is the beach side of town
Negril has two coasts. This one is the long sand rather than the limestone cliffs, so the evening here ends on a beach rather than above the water.
Our take
Our view: worth choosing rather than settling into, and worth an evening rather than a lunch. Go for the cooking and the setting together, because separating them is not really what this place offers.
