Beyond the resort

Beyond the Resort: Montego Bay

The question is not whether to leave the property. It is which one or two things are worth leaving for.

Montego Bay · Updated September 2026

A resort is a perfectly good way to do Jamaica. Somebody else handles the logistics, the water is thirty seconds from the room, and after a long flight that is worth more than most people admit. Nothing here is an argument against any of that.

The question worth asking is narrower. Not whether to go out, but which few hours off the property would give you something the property could not have given you anyway. Four answers follow, and picking one of them is a complete trip.

Leave for the food

One meal off property can make the food part of the destination.

  1. Eat at Scotchies

Jerk is a method before it is a flavour, and a hotel kitchen cannot really show you the method. At Scotchies the pans are the room. You watch the thing happen, order at the pit, and eat it a few feet from where it came off the fire, which is a different experience to the same words appearing on a buffet card.

It is also the lowest commitment thing on this list. Nothing needs arranging, it takes a long lunch rather than a day, and it sits on the road east at Coral Gardens, which means it pairs with the next stop instead of competing with it.

Leave for the history

This coast has a past the beachfront does not explain.

  1. Give an hour to Rose Hall Great House

Rose Hall Great House was finished in 1770 and restored two centuries later, which is why there is a house to walk through rather than a ruin to look at. The interesting part is not the architecture. It is what the land around it did for a living, and how much of this coastline was shaped by that.

You will also get the story of the White Witch, which is the part most visitors turn up already knowing. Take it as folklore, because that is what it is, and let the house and the ground it stands on be the reason you went.

Leave for something the beach cannot do

Twenty minutes inland, and nothing on a schedule.

  1. Sit still at Rocklands Bird Sanctuary

Rocklands is a garden on a hillside above Anchovy where wild hummingbirds come to the hand, the red billed streamertail among them, which lives in Jamaica and nowhere else on earth. Lisa Salmon started feeding them in the 1950s and opened the place to visitors in 1962, and it has kept that shape ever since.

It earns a place on a resort trip precisely because it is the opposite of one. Nothing is laid on, nothing performs on cue, and the whole hour only works if you sit down and wait for wild birds to decide about you. An hour here is the most unlikely thing near Montego Bay.

Leave after dark

The one trip that does not cost you any beach.

  1. Go out on the Luminous Lagoon

Every other reason to leave takes hours you would otherwise have spent by the water. This one takes none of them, because it only exists after dark. At Falmouth, along the coast east of the city, fresh water off the Martha Brae meets the sea in a shallow bay, and what lives in the result gives off light when the water moves.

You see it from a boat, and getting into it is usually part of the evening. Choose a dark night if you can. A full moon does not stop it happening, it just takes most of it away from you.

How to choose

None of this is an argument for filling a week with excursions. Two of these four is a lot on a seven night stay, and one of them is not a failure.

Geography does most of the choosing for you. Scotchies and Rose Hall sit on the same road east and make an easy half day in either order. Falmouth is further along that same coast and belongs to an evening. Rocklands goes the other way, up into the hills, and is a morning.

Everything here is an afternoon or an evening rather than a whole day, and all of it hands you back to the property in time for the part of the holiday you actually booked.

Our take

Our view: the resort is not the thing to escape, it is the thing to come back to. What changes a Jamaica trip is not how many hours you spend off the property but whether any of them were spent somewhere the property could not have reproduced. One meal cooked in the open, one house with a difficult history behind it, one hour of hummingbirds, or one dark bay that lights up when you move. Any single one of those and Montego Bay stops being the view from the balcony.
