Harmony Beach Park
Howard Cooke Boulevard, Montego Bay
A sixteen acre public beach park on the Montego Bay waterfront, opened in 2021 and run as a park rather than as a bathing club.
Why go
It is a park with a beach in it rather than a beach with a gate on it, which makes it a genuinely different decision to Doctor's Cave a few minutes along the same shore.
Sixteen acres gives it room for things a beach alone does not have: lawns, a jogging trail, courts, picnic space and shade, with the water at the end of all of it.
Where it fits
It sits on Howard Cooke Boulevard at the eastern end of the waterfront, about seven minutes from Sangster International by car. On a first or last day that proximity is the whole argument.
It works for an afternoon with children or for a swim that does not have to be organised. It is not a snorkelling trip.
Good to know
It is a public park
Harmony Beach Park was developed by the Urban Development Corporation and opened in May 2021. It is run as public recreational space, which is the difference between it and a bathing club.
There is more here than sand
Lawns, a jogging trail with a rubberised surface made from recycled material, courts, picnic areas, changing rooms and food vendors. The beach is one part of the site.
The planting is deliberate
Species endemic to Jamaica were planted through the grounds when the park was built, which is why it reads as landscaped rather than cleared.
Our take
Our view: if Doctor's Cave is the beach for a swim and a mask, this is the beach for an afternoon. Bring people who want to sit in the shade as much as get in the water, and it does more for you than the strip does.
